New World makes it with great ease

By: Stay Thirsty   June 30 , 2016

Sharavanan trained New World had it easy in the 1200 metres H R C Trophy, a race for horses rated 60 and above, the feature event of Thursday`s Mysore races. Over a trip reckoned to be too sharp for his style of running, New World came up with a late flourish on the wide outside and won comfortably from Clever Trick, his obvious class overcoming the disadvantages.

The race had an open look about it, with none of the runners looking outstanding. Clever Trick who had won her last outing, was fancied along with Avocet and Sufficient Proof to have a bold show. The last named who was sluggish at the start and refused to pick up momentum and raced tailed off last, ran without hope. New World who took a long while to reach the starting gate and was in danger of bolting, was caught up with before the seven-year-old could do any damage to himself. Vijays Best led the field into the straight before Clever Trick who was in earnest chase, took over the running and went sailing ahead. Avocet made a strong bid but was unable to change gears as it were. New World showed up on the wide outside, smoothly accelerated and by the final 100 metres, looked set to win the race easily as Clever Trick was slackening. New World went on to win by a widening margin of two lengths at big odds. Class Is Class ran on to edge past Avocet to get the third place.

Michael Eshwer trained The Wolf was the shortest priced horse to win during the course of day`s action. Quoted at miserly odds to record an encore in the 1400 metres Kemmannugundi Plate, a race for horse rated 40 to 65. Zervan had the favourite tracking runaway leader Classic King before releasing the brakes in the run in for home. The Manjri Stud Farm produce quickly covered the leeway and went away for an effortless win. Winged King found the winner too good for comfort and had to settle for the runner up berth.

Trainer C V G K Kishore had a double for the day. Tremendous towered over the rest in the1200 metres Shuntikoppa Plate, a race for horses rated 20 to 45, the last race of the day and accordingly was accorded the status of being a firm favourite. Tremendous however found himself outpaced in the early part of the race and was gracing almost the wrong end of the field. John quickly made his move to come within striking position at the final bend though he had considerably lee way to make up. Tremendous travelled wide into the straight and by the time he got going, Speed Queen appeared to have stolen a march. However, Tremendous devoured ground in the final furlong and in the end, ran out an easy winner. Country`s Angel was third.

Kishore`s other ward, had in the earlier race, had brought off a big upset in the hands of apprentice Ajay Kumar. Class Above was a decisive winner of the 1200 metres Anekal Plate, a race for horses rated 40 to 65. Apprentice Ajay Kumar who has had a few winners in his debut season, is riding pretty well. He angled out Class Above inside the final furlong to get a clear run on the wide outside and the progeny of Oath took off from there and left the rest stranded to win in emphatic fashion by a margin of over six lengths. Dark William who led the charge till then, had no answer when Class Above swooped on him and displayed his undoubted class on the front runner who plodded home in second position. Umarkot was third.

M P Kamath trained Second Lady hadn`t won for 679 days and since she had run only once in the last season, there were not many who expected a change in fortunes for the seven-year-old mare. The mare hadn`t performed well in earlier runs, finishing about 10 lengths adrift of the winner in each of her runs. The presence of John perhaps was the reason why Giralda had more takers than the rest. After Western Alliance had expended his energy running in front, long shot Second Lady took over the running inside the final 200 metres and determinedly held off the late surge of Happy Victory to win at odds of 50 to 1, the Doddaballapura Plate (Div I), a race for horses in the lowest category. Western Alliance stayed on to finish third while favourite Giralda who struggled for speed in the straight, was not spotted at the busy end. Senator shaped like a winner in the lower division of the race but the finishing burst of Eudora put paid to his intentions as the latter managed to get the nod in the closing moments of the race.

Feroz Khan trained Counter Point had impeccable credentials to win the 1600 metres Itarsi Plate, a race for horses rated 20 to 45. Counter Point tackled the front running Defining Moment at the top of the straight and went smoothly ahead. Concentration tried hard but found the front runner unrelenting.
