THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: PWD Minister G Sudhakaran has been tough on the maintenance of roads. Days after conducting inspections in the National Highway, the PWD has taken action against two assistant engineers and overseers for not executing work properly.
During an inspection recently, PWD Minister had found that the pothole filling works done using Rs 19 crore allotted to the National Highway wing of PWD was ineffective as potholes resurfaced soon after the work.
He also found that officials were not supervising works. Following this, PWD Minister has issued an order suspending Manoj P, grade overseer in NH division of PWD, Alappuzha. He also transferred assistant engineers Sreedevi C T and Dhanyata Bhayi V G. He said that department level action will be taken against assistant executive engineer.
While minister conducted inspection at NH in Alappuzha, he noticed that none of the PWD officials were present during the work. Though minister waited for nearly half an hour at the site, no officials turned up. Only the contractor was present at the site.
The suspension and transfer was issued for not conducting supervision as per the PWD manual. The office of PWD minister said that the explanation given by officials were not satisfactory.
The minister said that engineers and other officials of PWD must show more responsibility in executing their duties and to make the department proud. He said the required awareness and training classes would be provided soon.
The PWD is organising a training programme for all its engineers at July 9. DMRC principal advisor E Sreedharan will speak at the function to be held at Thiruvananthapuram.
