Heavy rains continued to lash Hassan and Shivamogga districts on Thursday.
The incessant rain affected life in Hassan district. There were many cases of tree-fall in Sakleshpur taluk. Travelling on roads in Arkalgud, Alur and other parts has become difficult. Also, fields have been inundated, posing a challenge to farmers.
Residents of Hettur and Yesalur hoblis in Sakleshpur taluk told presspersons that hundreds of trees had fallen in the farms owing to heavy rains. In some parts, power supply was disrupted following the uprootal of electricity poles. The highest rainfall of 121 mm was recorded at Hettur in Sakleshpur taluk.
The water level in Hemavati reservoir is rising. On Thursday morning, the level stood at 2,870 ft against the full reservoir level of 2,922 ft.
A KSRTC bus with a porous roof left passengers drenched in Alur taluk on Wednesday. People travelling from Alur to Kadal told presspersons that they had to sit in the bus with their umbrellas unfurled.
When The Hindu contacted Prakash Babu, Divisional Commissioner for KSRTC Hassan division, he said: “We have taken measures to cover the roof of all 594 buses in the division with tar felts. The driver had taken this bus for a trip even as the covering of tar felt in the depot was going on. If he had taken any other bus, this could have been avoided,” he said. “Now, I have instructed that all buses are covered immediately.”
Rivers in spate
Tunga and Sharavati rivers continued to be in spate in Shivamogga district on Thursday owing to the downpour in their catchment areas.
The water level in Linganamakki reached 1,761 ft against the maximum level on 1,819 ft. The inflow was at the rate of 29,575 cusecs.

As the water level in Tunga reservoir reached its full capacity, water at the rate of 16,935 cusecs was being discharged from the reservoir to the river.
Agumbe a nd Hulikal each recorded 13 cm rain, while Hosanagar received 8 cm, and Talaguppa and Humchadakatte 7 cm each.
