Two grandchildren, 12 and 5 years old, led police in Texas on a chase that one witness pegged at around 100 mph, it was reported Thursday.
Police in and near Conroe, north of Houston, initially believed the incident was a case of a stolen car and kidnapping, but it turned out the girls took their grandmother’s car out for a joyride, NBC affiliate KPRC in Houston reported.
The grandmother reported the missing car to police. The chase began at around 5:30 p.m. local time (6:30 p.m. ET) after a Conroe officer tried to pull the car over and the driver — which turned out to be the 12-year-old — took off, police told the station. The pursuit spanned 11 miles.
No one was hurt in the chase which ended when the 12-year-old driver pulled over in a high school in nearby Montgomery, the station reported.
One witness told the station the car knocked the mirror off their car on Texas State Highway 105 and then drove on the shoulder in the wrong direction.
"The vehicle being pursued hit multiple vehicles along 105 resulting in minor damage and no injuries, thank goodness," Montgomery Police Chief Jim Napolitano said in a statement. "Two juveniles were involved and no injuries at that point either."
Police told KPRC that the older girl was taken into custody and the younger child was released to her grandmother.
Conroe is a city of around 56,000, about 40 miles north of Houston.
