Rotary club raises Rs. 1 crore for polio eradication

: Rotary District-3020 has achieved a rare feat. The organisation, which covers six revenue districts of Krishna, Visakhapatnam, Vizianagaram, Srikakulam and East and West Godavari, consisting of 85 clubs with 4,300 Rotarians, has successfully raised funds to the tune of Rs. 1 crore for polio eradication.

India is one of the susceptible countries taking to a series of immunisation drives in the last phase which requires huge funding support.

The Rotary District, under active fund mobilisation by M. Satish Babu, Chairman of the Polio Fund, went out of its way to raise Rs. 1 crore, creating a record in its 26-year-old history.

Besides friends, relatives, neighbours, well-wishers, the members approached various organisations like walking clubs, cricket clubs and visited schools educating children on the need to eradicate the scourge of polio. and motivated them to collect small amounts for the good cause. In addition, A polio raffle with tickets priced at Rs. 500 was organised that fetched a sum of Rs. 40 lakh. Many Rotarians also donated liberally for the cause.

“Added to this, a grant of Rs. 2 crore will be provided by the Bill Gates and Melinda Foundation which has announced a matching contribution of Rs. 2 for every Re.1 raised for the purpose. The total amount of Rs. 3 crore can be used to immunise around 7.2 lakh children,” said Mr. Satish Babu.
