The sewage flowing from a damaged Corporation toilet septic tank pipe causes serious health hazards to the children of an anganwadi in Tirunelveli Town.
As the Corporation’s public toilet near Subbulakshmi Marriage Hall in Tirunelveli Town is not properly maintained, the pipes connecting the sanitary complex with the septic tank remain damaged for the past three months.
Consequently, the sewage flowing from the broken pipes stagnate in front of the nearby anganvadi, where 30 children have been admitted.
Cover up
Whenever, the anganwadi personnel and the people living nearby inform the Corporation officials about this problem, a couple of sanitary workers would be rushed to the spot to cover the sewage with sand, after which they leave the spot immediately.
“The replacement of damaged pipes carrying sewage alone will be a permanent solution to this problem. Since the problem is yet to be solved, we’ve to use mosquito coils to neutralise the foul odour though we are aware that the fumes emanating from the coils is not good for health,” said a parent of one of the children admitted in the anganwadi.
“Besides posing serious health hazards to these children, the stagnating sewage also drives away the customers coming to the nearby ‘amma unavagam’. Hence, we have also forwarded complaints to the Corporation officials,” said a woman employee of the ‘amma unavagam’.
‘Remedy soon’
An official of Corporation’s Tirunelveli Zone said the issue would be sorted out immediately by replacing the damaged pipes.
