Nagpur: Presenting a concept which at once promotes literature and music, Vidarbha Sahitya Sangh’s Sumiran, presented under the aegis of its ongoing event Sursarita, was a riveting event for those who are concerned with the academic part of music. Held at the music department of Dharampeth Mahavidyalay, the one and half-hour presentation recognized the musicians of Vidarbha, gave a platform to emerging singers and appreciated the efforts of academicians.
“Our effort through this programme, which is to be held every three months, is to focus on a book which has music as its subject,” said Arundhati Vaidya, library in-charge at VSS.
This was third edition of the event, and the focus was a book ‘Kehat Gunijan’ by Sadhana Shiledar, associate professor at Vasantrao Naik Government Institute. Shiledar has compiled 200 bandish, (a fixed melodic composition set to a raag), composed by 40 musicians of Vidarbha. Eight of these bandish were presented this evening by young singers. Starting off with a presentation of raag Shobhavari was vocalist Chaitanya Balpande, who sang a bandish by vocalist Sharad Sutaone and of Usha Parkhi in Gorakh Kalyan.
Manjari Vaidya chose a bandish by Manoharrao Kaslikar in raag Bhatiyar. She gave a mesmerizing presentation in raag Des, ‘Mangal gao rijhao,’ set by herself. Her rendition of Dinkarrao Deshpande’s bandish ‘balma na maney man ki’, in raag Bhinna Shadaj was equally enthralling.
Narayanrao Mangrulkar’s bandish in raag Dhanashree was rendered by Shruti Diwe who also did justice to Ramesh Rajhans’s bandish in raag Bhimpalas. Showcasing his robust vocals with Appasaheb Indurkar’s bandish in rag Abhogi Kanada and another one by Balasaheb Purohit’s in raag Charukeshi was Pankaj Rangaari. But the show stealer was 15 year old Radhika Palamwar who won accolades with her rendition of Prabhakarrao Khadnavis bandish in raag Yaman and another one of Dattatrey Wazalwar in raag Des.
Lauding the concept as unique, Tanuja Nafde, HoD Music, Dharampeth Mahavidyalay, said that a bandish is precious music heritage which helps in preserving raag. The next edition of Sursarita will be held at LAD college on September 24.
