SRINAGAR, June 30: Legislative Council witnessed ruckus today over the issue of an alleged suicide bid by a woman IAS officer as the Opposition legislators demanded action against another bureaucrat allegedly involved in the incident. After the ruckus, Chairman Anayat Ali adjourned the House.
As soon as the House met this morning, Opposition National Conference (NC) legislator Qaiser Jamsheed Lone raised the issue of an alleged suicide bid by an IAS officer.
The IAS officer, who allegedly tried to commit suicide, was among six officers transferred by State Cabinet on June 26. Lone said action should be taken against that officer as well. The NC MLC was supported by Congress legislator Ghulam Nabi Monga, who asked why no FIR was registered in the case.
The opposition members demanded a statement from the Government over the issue, but Chairman Anayat Ali asked them to sit down. “The Government is inquiring into the issue, you sit down,” Ali said. However, Lone, Monga and NC’s Showkat Ganai entered into the Well of the House demanding a statement from the Government and action against the officer.
They raised slogans against the Government which infuriated the members of the ruling parties, who entered into a verbal fight with the opposition members.
In the melee, Leader of the House and Education Minister Naeem Akhtar intervened and asked the opposition members to name the officer if they had guts. “If they have a problem with someone, they should name that person. We do not have divine revelation. Have they named anybody? Do you have the moral strength? Can they name someone? I have the moral strength, you do not have. Who is he? Name him? Name the officer?”, Akhtar asked the protesting members.
The Minister warned the opposition of naming “their people” who have been “involved in scandals”. “I do not have a divine revelation to know about whom you are talking about. You name him, otherwise I will take the names and you will not get a place to hide. I will name your scandals. You are talking just like that. “If you have guts, take the name. Otherwise, I will take the names of those persons which are in your scandals. I will take the names of the people who have been in jail for six months,” Akhtar said.
However, the opposition members continued to protest and raise slogans against the Government, following which the Chairman adjourned the House for five minutes. As the House met again, the opposition members once again raised the issue and demanded the statement. As the Chairman did not allow their demand, the protesting members staged a walkout. However, their party colleagues from Jammu region did not walk out from the House. Later, the members walked in.
