77 persons booked under PSA during 2016: Govt

SRINAGAR, June 30: Jammu and Kashmir police have booked 77 persons under Public Safety Act in first six months of year 2016, out of which 20 have been released.
This information was disclosed by Minister incharge in a written reply to clubbed questions of National Conference lawmakers, Dr Shehnaz Ganai, Showkat Hussain Ganai and Dr Bashir Ahmad Veeri in Upper House here.
The Minister stated that during last two years from 2014 upto June 12, 2016, 240 persons have been detained under the provisions of the Jammu and Kashmir Public Safety Act, 1978 and the Jammu and Kashmir Prevention of Illicit Traffic in Narcotic and Drugs Act, 1998.
According to the official figures, 69 persons were detained under the PSA in 2014, 94 in 2015 and 77 upto January 1 to June 6, 2016. Out of 240 detained under PSA so far, 153 have been released, the figures reveal while 87 are under detention while out of 77 in 2016, only 20 have been released.
The Minister incharge said that 1075 First Information Reports (FIRs) have been lodged during the period. The Government has however refused to reveal the names of the detenues, saying: “it would not be feasible to disclose the names of these detenues in view of security considerations.”
The Minister incharge said during the year 2010, 182 persons involved in stone pelting were detained under PSA and all of them were released after completion/ quashment/ revocation of dention term upto ending 2014.
With regard to a query vis-à-vis criteria being adopted by the Government in slapping the PSA in the State, the Minister said the detention orders are generally passed by the District Magistrate (s) on consideration of the dossier prepared by the concerned SSP or SP.
