Kochi road to get fresh lease of life

ThammanamPullepady road development gets sanction

KOCHI: With the state government giving administrative sanction for the MG Road – Infopark road project, the decades-old Thammanam – Pullepady road development has got a fresh lease of life. The project stuck for long will have to be carried out by the city corporation as part of the first phase of MG Road-Infopark road project, which P.T. Thomas MLA recently raised as a submission in the Assembly. Though the corporation has handed over the road to public works department, the agency did little except preparing a detailed project report.

The project though found mention in the previous government’s annual budget is yet to get any funding. The Rs 25 crore allocated for land acquisition earlier has been deposited with the district collector. Meanwhile, corporation works committee chair P. M. Harris told DC that the civic body is yet to get any formal communication from the state government in this regard.

“Though the MG Road - NH 47 (Chakkaraparambu) Road has been under consideration for long, the civic body alone can’t take up the project,” he said. The 2.8 km road will improve the east-west connectivity and is the key alternate route for diverting traffic from MG Road.

Expected cost for developing widening the road to 22 metres is nearly Rs 263 crore including the cost of 4.01 hectares of land. The previous civic administration had requested the state government to take over the road development, which currently has a width of seven to 10 metres.
