Plans to extend Noida’s Sector 62 metro route up to Indirapuram in Ghaziabad has been put on hold as the proposed extension clashes with the proposed Delhi-Meerut Expressway project over NH-24.

Plans to extend Noida’s Sector 62 metro route up to Indirapuram in Ghaziabad have been put on hold as the proposed extension clashes with the proposed Delhi-Meerut Expressway (DME) project over national highway (NH) 24.

In a board meeting in April, Ghaziabad development authority (GDA) had cleared a proposal for preparation of a detailed project report (DPR) for extending Sector 62 metro in Noida towards Indirapuram in Ghaziabad. The DPR, being prepared by Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), has been put on hold.

The issue came into the spotlight after the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) denied permission for extension of the metro on the proposed route, as a flyover is to be constructed as part of the DME project near the CISF crossing.

“Since the metro will cross over to Indirapuram over an elevated section, there will be problems due to the flyover. We held discussions with NHAI officials but they said that their project is already cleared and changes may not be possible. However, we have sent them further communication to resolve the issue. Until that time, DPR for the project has been put on hold,” Vijay Kumar Yadav, vice-chairman of GDA, said.

The hold up of the project will also delay the proposed metro extension from Indirapuram towards Sahibabad. DMRC had recently sent a proposal to GDA for the preparation of a detailed project report (DPR) for extension of metro from Sector 62 to Sahibabad and also from the Vaishali Metro station to Mohan Nagar.

The tentative length for both the extensions is around 9.5km — 5km for the extension from Vaishali to Mohan Nagar and 4.5km for the proposed link from Sector 62 to Sahibabad.

The metro extensions are planned to ease commute between Ghaziabad and Noida and further towards Delhi. Officials plan to make Mohan Nagar a major interchange hub, akin to Rajiv Chowk in Delhi.

GDA officials maintain that the flyover plans have to be reconsidered to allow an elevated metro alignment from Sector 62 towards Indirapuram.

Non-materialisation of the metro link will prove a major setback for extending the link from Sector 62 to Sahibabad.

At present, there is a single metro extension in Ghaziabad — 2.57km extension from Anand Vihar to Vaishali. Work on the 9.41km extension from Dilshad Garden to New bus stand is in progress.
