Almost four years after being voted the World's Most Hated Celebrity by America's Star magazine Gwyneth Paltrow has opened up about the unflattering accolade.

Speaking to Stephen Sackur, host of BBC News' Hard Talk, the 43-year-old Oscar-winning actress said she was surprised at being voted higher than Chris Brown, despite the rapper admitting assaulting his then girlfriend Rihanna in 2009.

"First of all, I was like, 'I'm the most hated celebrity? More than, like, Chris Brown?' What did I do?" She told BBC News show Hardtalk.

"I see where you are coming from, but maybe you just make people feel bad sometimes," Sackur suggested.

Paltrow insisted that the negative attention is unwarranted and said people who don't known her shouldn't "draw conclusions" about her life.

"All I can do is be my authentic self, and if you know me, then you know who I am, and that I have fun and eat and am so appreciative for my life. But I think there are things about me that make people draw conclusions."

Paltrow, who was raised in Manhattan by established parents - director Bruce Paltrow and actress Blythe Danner - acknowledged that there is a perception that she was brought up "with a silver spoon" in her mouth, and insists she was financially independent after graduation from college.

"That inspires a lot of resentment," Gwyneth said.

"My parents did well, and I was able to go to a fantastic school, and we grew up in New York City, but the minute I left my college to try to pursue acting, my father [the late director Bruce Paltrow] was really supportive.

"But he said, you know, 'You are completely on your own.' So, he never gave me anything. I never had any supplementation, he never helped me with my rent, I never had a trust fund," Gwyneth insisted.

"So the idea that I am spoiled or that I didn't work for what I have is just not accurate, but I can see how somebody might have that perception."

The star's love of healthy living and controversial lifestyle choices are well documented on Paltrow's website Goop, which allows consumers to emulate Paltrow's lifestyle.

"People tend to think that I eat just seaweed and a bit of air," she said of her refined tastes. I have never had a horrible experience with French fries. French fries are my life!"

Martin and Paltrow (above) 'consciously uncoupled' in 2014

Paltrow continued to raise eyebrows when she 'consciously uncoupled' with Coldplay frontman Chris Martin in 2014, but she admitted she is still close with the father of her two children.

"My children know that we're in a loving family," she said. "And I adore their father even though we're not in a romantic relationship."
