In a rare show of courage, two tribal youths from Odisha's Koraput district plunged into the swelling Jhanjabati river on last Sunday to save five boys from getting drowned in a flash flood.

The youths, identified as Harischandra Hiaal and Mohan Garda of the Harijan Sahi area of Narayanpatna, used a bamboo stick to rescue the stranded children.

According to reports, at around 2.30 pm on Sunday, the kids had gone to the river to take a bath. They were quite unaware of the fact that heavy rain had occurred at the upper reaches of the river a day earlier and the river could be flooded soon.

While the children were busy playing in the river, the water rose to the neck level all of a sudden. The panicked children climbed atop a large boulder in the middle of the river to save themselves.

GOOD SAMARITANS

The children's cry for help fell on the ears of Harishchandra and Mohan, who were passing by. The duo immediately rushed to help them and called other villagers.

The villagers gathered on the spot and held on to a bamboo pole. Holding the same pole, the youths waded through the heavy current to reach the children and brought them to the river bank one after another.
