DU’s online portal a flop on Day 1 of admission: But can’t India’s best university do better?

While the idea of getting results online is to avoid the hassle of having to physically come to main centre, the DU website has only increased the troubles of the students.

In the online process, the candidates have to check the cut-offs on the portal, then select course and college to get an admission slip. They then have to carry the slip along with other required documents to the college.

But since morning, students kept trying to log in to the official website, but all futile. Some hassled students and their parents flocked to the campus, other took refuge in the internet cafes which overcharged them — at times up to three times the actual rates.

Those from the city used their bargaining skills, but the outstation students had no option by to give in to their demands. Even for those who paid, the admission forms were not printed correctly or the computers weren’t functioning properly.

Incidentally, similar problems were experienced when IIT-JEE’s Advanced 2016 result were announced. Though only about two lakh students appeared for the exam, the website could not take load and crashed soon after. How a premier engineering institute that has delivered great minds to the world of computing can manage, or accept this, is beyond everyone.

DU’s tech failures on Day 1 has only made life tough for aspirants and their guardians. All they expect from DU is to do the basics right. That shouldn’t be so tough.
