Gordon Richards puts faith in the future generation of jockeys

LINCOLN MOOREThe Advertiser

GORDON Richards hopes to secure some overseas spending money at Morphettville on Saturday.

The top trainer saddles up two runners — Chapel City and Artful Jack — in the $100,000 Schweppes Plate and said he was more than happy to put his faith in the future generation of young jockeys.

Former Hong Kong-based apprentice Matthew Poon will again partner Chapel City, while Ryan Hurdle will ride Artful Jack.

Richards said it was impossible not to like the way Poon handled the pressure of his first city ride to score a fast-finishing win on despised outsider Chapel City at Morphettville three weeks ago.

The pair were slow into stride, saved ground towards the inside and came with a brilliant finishing burst to win at $101.

“Chapel City surprised me a bit,’’ Richards said from holidays in Europe.

“His work had been OK but I thought the other horse (Ashero) had a better chance based on their work at home.

“They’re the good ones, horses who surprise like that when they get to the track and he’s done really well since.’’

Hurdle takes the ride on stablemate Artful Jack, who had no luck from a tricky gate last time.

“Artful Jack went via the cape on the corner last time,’’ the trainer said.

“We’ve put the blinkers on him.

“His work in blinkers has been good but he’s drawn the outside again.

“He’s going to need luck, but that draw might be in his favour on the bigger track.’’

Poon, aboard Chapel City, will be trying to upstage his boss Richard Jolly, who saddles up leadings chances Bangs ($2.20 favourite) and Time Out ($4.50).

It will be another busy day for the in-demand youngster, who has rides in all but one of the eight races at Morphettville tomorrow.
