KARACHI: The monsoon rains started in Sindh including provincial capital on Tuesday evening. As per details, several parts of Sindh witnessed moderate showers facing season’s first monsoon rainfall. Parts of Karachi, Hyderabad, Tharparkar, Badin, Umerkot, Sanghar districts and adjoining parts also received downpours. The central and east parts of the provincial received moderate rain while Hyderabad, Qasimabad and Latifbabad also received showers. In Badin, apart from district headquarter, Tando Bago, Khoski, Pangrio, Nindo and Shadi Large received light rain. Parts of Tharparkar including Mithi, Chelhar, Kaloi also got moderate rains. However, a 16-year-old girl, Mehran, daughter of Waalim Bheel, was killed due to lightning and thunderstorm in Bhooro Ji Dhaani village. It was second light showers in a week time in drought hit area. According to an area elder from Tharpakar, Noor Ahmed Janjhi, “It is a good gesture of monsoon. The earth will be washed out and trees will be freshened and everyone will be prepared for sowing.” In Sanghar district, Kandiyari, Khadro, Shahpur Chakar, Sinjhoro and Chotiyario received light rains. Other areas including Achhro Thar, Sindhri and Naunkot also received moderate showers. The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has predicted rain accompanied by strong gusty winds at scattered places in lower Sindh for next 28 hours. According to the PMD, rainfalls are also expected in Quetta, Zhob, Kalat, Sibbi, Naseerabad, Makran divisions in Balochistan. The PMD added, “Monsoon currents are continuously penetrating in the country and likely to continue during next couple of days. A westerly wave is present over Afghanistan and western border of Pakistan and likely to persist during next 24 to 36 hours.”
