A swamp deer was critically wounded after it was shot at by poachers in Farrukhabad district on Monday.The animal is under treatment at veterinary hospital.

Kanpur: A swamp deer was critically wounded after it was shot at by poachers in Farrukhabad district on Monday. The animal is under treatment at veterinary hospital.
The incident took place near Dhaighat close to the Ganga river. The villagers found the injured animal and informed the forest officials.
The forest department personnel rushed to the spot and lodged a complaint with the local police following which an FIR was registered against unidentified poachers under various sections of Wildlife Protection Act.

Devesh Kumar Srivastava, an officer of Social Forestry division said the banks of river Ganga on the other side is home to swamp deer and the animals often visit the place to quench thirst. "However, the Monday shooting incident has posed a threat to their safe existence," said Srivastava. He added that investigation has been launched in coordination with the local police to nab and punish the offenders.
"These animals often visit water bodies following which they become a prey. We are trying to step up vigilance," he added.
