ODF campaign in Kannur

The district administration will take steps to construct toilets in all households in the district having no toilet facilities by August end.

An official press release here said that District Collector P. Bala Kiran made this announcement at a meeting at the Collectorate here as part of the the open defecation-free (ODF) campaign.

A survey of households having no toilet facility had been completed, he said adding that all the households in the district would have toilet facility when 6,242 toilets were built. Only three districts in the country have 100 per cent toilet facilities in households, he said adding that none of them is in South India. The press release informed that 12 panchayats in the district have achieved the toilets-for- every-household status. In the Panur block all households have toilets, by completing the 54 toilets in four panchayats.

The estimated cost of constructing a toilet is Rs. 15,400, it said adding that Rs. 12,000 would be borne by the Suchitwa Mission and the remaining amount by respective local bodes.

The ODF campaign will be intensified in tribal areas, the Collector said directing officials to give special focus in areas as Aralam, Kottiuyur, Padiyur-Kallyad, Eramam-Kuttoor, Payam, Muzhakkunnu, Peringome-Vayakkara, Cherupuzha, Naduvil and Kanichar panchayats.
