Lawyers boycott court, plan ‘rail roko’ today

June 29, 2016 12:00 am | Updated September 16, 2016 04:58 pm IST - CHENNAI:

The boycott call issued by the Madras High Court Advocates Association (MHAA) demanding immediate withdrawal of amendments made to the statutory Rules empowering courts to debar erring lawyers was partially successful as a considerable number of lawyers abstained from court proceedings on Tuesday.

Over 100 advocates blocked the NSB road near the High Court premises for about 20 minutes and raised slogans demanding total withdrawal of the amendments.

The lawyers, however, restrained from staging any protest on the court premises.

Briefing the press, association secretary S. Arivazhagan said, “We have changed the venue for the rail roko protest scheduled for Wednesday from Central Railway station to Chennai Beach station, so that more advocates could participate.”

He added that they would block all the trains passing through the station at 11.30 a.m. on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, the Registrar General of the High Court issued a statement informing that following resolutions passed in the Full Court meeting held on June 16, a committee comprising Justices S. Manikumar, S. Nagamuthu, Rajiv Shakdher, M.M. Sundresh and P.N. Prakash has been constituted to suggest modifications to the amendment.
