The State Government had decided to implement the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana, a crop insurance scheme, in the State as a pilot project to help the farmers financially, said Minister for Agriculture Pattipati Pulla Rao here on Tuesday.

The scheme was launched in January to provide financial help at a low premium.

The Minister, at a review meeting on agriculture allied fields, wanted the officials to implement the scheme in toto and create greater awareness among farmers about the scheme.

Pointing out that horticulture crops make up for only 15.54 per cent of the area, he wanted the officials to encourage the farmers to double the area. It was necessary to increase the area under horticulture and commercial crops since they generated more revenue, he said.

To meet the demand for RGL paddy variety in the district, he suggested growing the same in the Chandranna Kshetrams.

The scheme was launched in January to provide financial help at a low premium.
