Ragpickers' murder: Fights led to crime

On Sunday, around 11 am, passersby noticed bodies of a man and woman lying on the footpath under the Metro track in V V Puram.

BENGALURU: The Central police have arrested a man and a woman in connection with a double murder of ragpickers that was reported on Sunday afternoon. The accused have been identified as Raja alias Raasa, 30, who hails from KGF in Kolar district, and Sowmya alias Lakshmi, 23, of Magadi taluk.

On Sunday, around 11 am, passersby noticed bodies of a man and woman lying on the footpath under the Metro track in V V Puram. The police established the identity of the deceased as Umesh, aged around 35, and Kutti, aged around 20. “Investigations revealed that Raja and Lakshmi, who were also ragpickers, used to have frequent fights with the deceased. Based on credible information, the accused were caught. When they were interrogated, they confessed to the crime.

They said they used to fight frequently with Umesh and Kutti over various issues. Around two years ago, Kutti had allegedly poured acid on Lakshmi’s leg during a fight,” the police said. “On Sunday, around 2.30 am, the duo went to the place where Umesh and Kutti used to sleep and murdered them by smashing their heads with a boulder,” the police added.
