R K Anand writes to Hamid Ansari: Don’t let Subhash Chandra sit in Parliament

The letter alleges that there was a “criminal conspiracy” to get 14 votes of Congress MLAs, which were to be cast in his favour, rejected.

DAYS AFTER an unexpected defeat to BJP-backed Independent candidate Subhash Chandra in the Rajya Sabha elections from Haryana, R K Anand has written to Chairman of the Upper House, Vice President Hamid Ansari, and urged him against letting the media baron take oath as an MP.

In his letter sent to Ansari on Monday, Anand, a senior advocate who was an Independent candidate backed by the INLD and the Congress, has stated that Chandra “should not be allowed to sit in Parliament till the whole issue is decided and (the) case is investigated”.

Anand had claimed support of 33 MLAs of INLD and Congress in the June 11 polls, but eventually lost out after the votes were rejected. He has earlier filed an FIR with Chandigarh police; the Haryana election commission also conducted an inquiry into his allegations. The report of the inquiry has been sent to Delhi.

In his letter, Anand has asserted that Chandra should not be sworn in due to “the fact that 14 votes of Congress MLAs were rejected, and an Independent candidate having only 15 votes was declared elected in my place (even though) I was having 33 votes…”

Festive offer

“I needed only 30 votes to win, but out of it 14 were rejected, which is unprecedented,” the senior lawyer told The Indian Express.

Along with his letter Anand has attached call details of Chandra’s aide Virendra Mohan and returning officer Rajendra Nandal’s mobile phones in an effort to prove that the two were in regular touch. Anand has also drawn Ansari’s attention to the pending civil and criminal cases against Chandra.

Anand claims: “Chandra has a chequered history of commission of various crimes. He has admitted that (a) number of criminal cases of cheating, fraud, extortion, besides other cases, are pending against him. These facts can be seen from the affidavits filed along with the nomination paper.”
