NEW DELHI: A 60-year-old man and a stray dog were found electrocuted in a puddle outside a medicine shop in Najafgarh village. Initial probe suggests that a live wire from the pharmacy could have snapped during the storm on Monday night and electrified the shop’s shutter and the puddle. A case of death due to negligence against unknown persons has been registered at Najafgarh police station.
Residents staged a protest after the man’s death claiming that the power company was informed about the fault, but no technician visited the spot. People had even put up barricades, but the rain turned the area into a death trap.
The victim, Trilok Nath, had gone to the pharmacy in Som Bazar to get medicines for his wife around 8am. His family said that the lane was flooded so Nath climbed on to a pedestal outside the medicine shop and leaned against the shutter. He got a shock from the shutter and fell into the puddle and got electrocuted.
His body was found floating when the shop owners arrived around 10am. Police were informed but they could not remove the body till officials from the discom, BSES, came and disconnected the power supply in the area. Nath’s body was taken to a government hospital where he was declared brought dead. He had recently retired as an accounts officer from MTNL and lived with his wife and three sons near the market. He was native of Chhapra in Bihar and had been staying in Delhi for the past 40 years.
Power supply experts were called to the spot to look into the culpability of the discom. BSES officials, however, said that when their team reached the spot the entire stretch was waterlogged. “Probe indicates leakage of power due to short circuit in an adjoining shop. BSES’s network was thoroughly checked and found to be in order,” said a BSES spokesman.
