NEW DELHI: A month after armed men looted cash and jewellery worth lakhs from a financier's house in Gulabi Bagh of north Delhi after holding his wife and 13-year-old son hostage at gunpoint, the crime branch has cracked the case. Most of the booty has been recovered. Some jewellery had been stashed in a gold repository firm.
The arrests also foiled another robbery bid by the gang. The men had set plans in motion to rob a cash van and had even recceed its office in the garb of AC mechanics.
"The suspects, identified as Gurmukh alias Laddi (27), Bharat Kumar (23), Himanshu (29) and Tanu Singh (23), were arrested by a special team led by DCP Bhisham Singh. Gold and silver jewellery worth around Rs 25 lakh have been recovered," said Ravindra Yadav, joint commissioner (crime).
On May 19, three armed robbers had gone to the financier's first floor house with a packet of sweets in the garb of giving an invitation for some function. They requested his wife to take the packet of sweets they had forgotten to give the financier along with the invitation card. Initially, she refused to open the door as she did not recognise any of them, but gave in after requests.
"As soon as she opened the door, the robbers barged into the house and started thrashing her. When the maid tried to raise an alarm from the balcony, they pulled her inside. The victim's son was held at gunpoint and the robbers threatened to shoot him if the woman didn't hand over all the cash and valuables to them," Yadav added.
The woman handed over around Rs.1.5 lakh in cash, 900gm gold jewellery, 500gm silver jewellery and other valuables to them. The robbers locked all of them in a bathroom and fled after locking the main door of the house.
"We got a tip-off on June 27 that the robbers would come to Mayapuri. They were arrested near Mayapuri depot. They came to know about the victim's financial standing after their friend Neeraj took a loan from him. The trio then decided to rob him," DCP Singh said.
