The head of the American Conservative Union said the 2016 election is shaping up to be more of a referendum on presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton than her GOP rival Donald Trump.

ACU Chairman Matt Schlapp said polls show that Mr. Trump is going “staggeringly well” despite his stumbles because of the reservations voters have about Mrs. Clinton.

“We are all looking at Donald Trump and saying, ‘My God, he is doing this and that is not the right way to do it,’ ” Mr. Schlapp said on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe.” “Well you got to realize at some point it is really about this 20-year relationship America has had with the Clintons, and at this point in our history, do they want to go with that?”

Mrs. Clinton is leading Mr. Trump by about 7 percentage points, according to the latest RealClearPolitics.com average of polls.
