Thiruvananthapuram: The make shift arrangement made by the previous UDF government to begin medical college hospitals in each district has started to boomerang.
The Idukki medical college hospital authorities are unable to provide clinical training for the second year MBBS students due to lack of facilities. Hence a decision has been taken to shift these students to other medical colleges to continue their studies in the second year.
The director of medical education wrote to the state government seeking permission to shift the students since in the second year the MBBS students will have to be given clinical training in different specialties.
"The proposal was given to the government and the decision is expected anytime," said Dr Ramla Beevi, director of medical education.
However, following the request from the DME the government has issued orders to shift 49 of the 50 MBBS students who have passed the first and second semester at the Idukki college.
The DME has reported that due to limited or severe shortage of faculties, theatre, specialty Ops, wards, labs etc, the MCH authorities of Idukki cannot provide clinical training for the third and fourth semester.
As per the curriculum the MBBS students during their second year will have to undergo clinical training in orthopaedics, dermatology, respiratory medicine, psychiatry, ophthalmology, ENT, casualty, clinical pathology and community medicine.

However the Idukki medical college which was started during the previous UDF rule in 2014 is not having any of these above mentioned facilities. Hence the college authorities had requested the DME to shift the students to other medical colleges to carry out their studies.
Now it has been decided to shift 18 students to Thiruvananthapuram, six to Allappuzha, eight to Kottayam, ten to Kozhikode and seven students to Thrissur medical colleges.
After completing their one year studies(3rd and 4th semester) they will be again brought back to the Idukki medical college for doing the third year course.
