Kanpur: Rubia Hasan, a native of Anantnag district of Jammu and Kashmir, received Cadence Gold Medal in the convocation ceremony for PG students held at IIT-Kanpur on Monday. Rubia is the only one among her siblings who had studied upto the PG level.
An NIT (Srinagar) graduate (BTech), Rubia while replying to a question about Kashmir said, "People in the valley are still not broadminded, and they think that there is no need to educate a girl as some or the other day she will get married".
She said that all girls are intelligent but not everyone is lucky to get the support from her family. She was lucky enough that she had been supported by her family and could see such a big day in her life, she said.
"It is the biggest thing for me that I have stepped out from my house and got education from the prestigious IIT-Kanpur", she added.
Reacting to a question on the tension which had prevailed few months ago in NIT Srinagar where two group of students had clashed over raising of slogans in favour of Pakistan during the India-West Indies semifinal match, Rubia said, "It is common in that campus that whenever there is a match between India and Pakistan, people in the campus go crazy over it".
For her, nothing has changed in Jammu and Kashmir after BJP and PDP coalition government came to power. "No party had ever tried to connect with the common people of the state. They had just made their own assumptions. They do not have an understanding about what people of the valley really want", she added. She avoided to react when asked about to comment on the two years rule of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
