Lawyers seek justice

June 28, 2016 12:00 am | Updated September 16, 2016 04:43 pm IST - SALEM:

Demanding that the recent amendments to the Advocates Act, 1961, be withdrawn immediately, members of the Salem Bar Association gagged their mouth with black ribbon and sought justice in front of the statue of Goddess of Justice in the Integrated Court Complex here on Monday.

Led by association president G. Ponnusamy and secretary K.R.R. Aiyyappamani, members gathered in front of the statue and voiced concern over the recent amendments that empower Madras High Court to debar them by excising powers conferred on it under Section 34 (1) of the Advocates Act, 1961.

“Despite our continued protest, the amendments were not withdrawn and we will intensify our protest in the coming days,” Mr. Ponnusamy said.

He added that they had planned a rail roko on Wednesday if their demand was not met by Tuesday.
