Students’ role in creating better environment stressed

Students should play a key role in creating awareness among the masses on environmental issues such as global warming, pollution, soil conservation, increasing forest cover and organic farming, said C. Swaminathan, Vice-Chancellor, Periyar University.

At the valediction of the inter-school and inter-collegiate competitions organised in connection with the World Earth Day celebrations by the Department of Environmental Science of the University here recently, Dr. Swaminathan said these issues have attained serious nature and should be the concern of one and all.

The winners were presented with a cash award of Rs. 5,000 towards I Prize;

Rs. 4,000 towards II Prize; Rs. 3,000 towards III prize.

Elocution: Group A (class VI to X): 1.K. Hemalatha (Municipal Girls HSS, Gugai), 2. G. Jothikumar (Panchayat Union Middle School, Thappakuttai), 3. G. Priya (Panchayat Union Middle School, Kuppampatti). Group B (class XI – XII and college UG courses): 1.R. Bharathipriya (Sri Sakthikailassh Women’s College), 2. S.J. Nakkheeran (Bharathiar HSS, Attur), 3. K. Deepa (Government Girls HSS, Edappadi).

Essay writing: Group A: 1. T. Jothi (MNS Government Girls HSS, Attayampatti), 2. R. Sangeethapriya (Government HS, C. N. Palayam), 3. R. Madavi (Bala Barathi Matriculation HSS).

Group B: 1. B. Priya Savithiri (GV HSS, Masilapalayam), 2. G. Saranya (Periyar University Constituent College, Pennagaram), 3. M. Vignesh (The Gugai HSS).

Drawing competition: Group A: 1. R. Santhosh Kumar (Gokulanatha Hindu Mahajana HSS), 2. U. Naveen (The Gugai HSS), 3. G. Sampathkumar (Government HS, Kunjandiyur).
