A MassDOT worker was hit by a suspected drunken driver on the Mass Pike early Monday morning, authorities say.

The worker, a 60-year-old man, was hit just before 1 a.m. while working in an active construction zone on the Mass Pike just before exit 24, according to the Massachusetts State Police. The worker, who was taken to Boston Medical Center, was “in serious condition but stable,” according to David Procopio, state police spokesperson.

The driver of the car was identified as Carlos Gonzalez, 59, of Boston, according to police.

Gonzalez fled the scene, but was located by a member of the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department beyond the Congress Street ramp in the tunnel, according to police.
