Durban - A suspected hijacker was killed and two others were wounded in a shootout with police in Newlands East late on Sunday night.
Police spokesperson Captain Nqobile Gwala said police and vehicle tracking agents reacted to information that a bakkie had been stolen in KwaDabeka.
"The members went to Inanda Road where they spotted the same suspicious vehicle and gave chase. The suspects allegedly opened fire towards the members and they returned fire, fatally wounding one suspect," she said.
"The vehicle crashed into a concrete barrier along Dumisani Makhaye Highway. Two other suspects, aged 21 and 34, sustained injuries and were arrested," Gwala added.
She said that the pair were taken to hospital, where they were treated and discharged.
"An unlicenced firearm with five live rounds of ammunition was found next to the deceased suspect.
Gwala said charges, including hijacking, attempted murder and possession of an unlicensed firearm, were opened at Newlands East police station for investigation.
The two were expected to make their first court appearance in the Ntuzuma Magistrate's Court on Tuesday.
