IFP calls for urgent action on crisis at SABC

The Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) has called on Minister of Communications Faith Muthambi and the SABC board to act urgently in the unfolding crisis at the public broadcaster and address the current “corrosive” state of affairs. The party warned that if left ‘unchecked’ the crisis would only bring the broadcaster into further disrepute and further damage its already tarnished image. It also called on the leadership of the SABC “to allow its journalists to work in an environment that does not compromise their ethics and to immediately stop censuring its news”. This comes in the wake of the resignation of the SABC’s acting group CEO Jimi Matthews who stated that what was happening at the state broadcaster was wrong and that he could no longer be a part of it.“The IFP is extremely concerned at the direction the SABC is taking. We fear that more key people of the calibre of Mr Matthews will also be leaving as they are being instructed to compromise on the journalistic values they hold so dear‚ such as freedom of press and objective‚ unbiased reporting‚” said IFP spokesperson on communications Liezl van der Merwe...
