A man was arrested Sunday in Aurora after an alleged armed robbery in which SWAT members were called to the scene and a stretch of a busy avenue was closed for several hours.

The incident started at about 8:15 a.m., when police were called to the 14400 block of East Mississippi Avenue on a “weapons violation” report, according to an Aurora Police Department media release.

When officers arrived a man, suspected of robbing another man at gunpoint, was seen running into a townhouse, police said.

Officers were preparing to call the home when a woman came outside. She was detained, and orders were given for anyone else inside to come out, police said.

Several people came out, police said, including the suspect in the armed robbery. Meanwhile, an officer behind the townhouse saw a man go out the back door, but he ran back inside when he spotted the officer.

Police, concerned that a potentially armed suspect was inside the townhouse, called in SWAT. A search warrant was issued on the residence and the townhouse was searched. No one was found inside. Police did seize two handguns inside the residence. It was not immediately clear if either gun was used in the robbery, police said.

Also unclear is what happened to the man who ran back inside via the back door.

The suspect, however, who had exited the front door earlier, was arrested on suspicion of aggravated robbery. His name was not released.

Traffic lanes of eastbound East Mississippi Avenue were closed from South Blackhawk Street to South Sable Boulevard for several hours by the incident. The lanes reopened at about 4 p.m.
