Online shopping is rising at a fast pace in Qatar, a top official of MasterCard has said.
Citing a recent survey carried out by MasterCard on online shopping behaviour in Qatar, MasterCard Middle East and Africa President Raghu Malhotra told Qatar Tribune that almost 55 percent of respondents had made an online purchase during the three months prior to the survey.
Qatar's strong performance is representative of the government's tireless efforts to increase efficiency across all sectors, he said, adding that the country's rapid adoption of digital technology has also acted as a springboard for further growth and development of online purchases in Qatar.
He said the growing trend of online purchases in Qatar presents MasterCard with a great opportunity to further tap into the market and offer technologies that accelerate online payments in the country.
"As one of the recent examples of our efforts focused on driving continued inclusive growth in the country, we collaborated with Qatar-based QPAY to launch the first Wage Protection System banking solution called WPS Card," he said.
WPS Card complies with the latest Wage Protection System laws of the Qatar Central Bank and special features have been added to the card to safeguard the interests of the country's low-wage foreign workers, he added.
Malhotra said 2016 is likely to see an increase in growth of e-commerce in Qatar as the awareness of the benefits of online shopping continues to spread among consumers.
