SMC appoints agencies for waste collection

Taking an important step towards segregation of waste in the diamond city, the Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) has appointed agencies for collection of electronic, plastic and construction-demolition waste from the seven municipal zones of the city.

Surat: Taking an important step towards segregation of waste in the diamond city, the Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) has appointed agencies for collection of electronic, plastic and construction-demolition waste from the seven municipal zones of the city.
A toll-free number has been allotted for the specific service through which residents can contact the concerned agencies for collection of different types of waste.
Official sources said the plastic waste collection has been started from the Katargam zone. In the last 10 days, the agency has collected more than three metric tons of plastic waste. The agency is soon going to set up 11 centres in the first phase and 40 centres in the second phase in all the seven municipal zones.
For plastic waste collection, residents can dial toll-free number '1800-233-3002'. The agency will depute the waste collectors at the door-steps and the plastic waste will be dumped at the 2 acre land allotted by the civic body at Bhatar. Similarly, the civic body has hired another agency for the e-waste collection in the city. The agency is all set to start the collection of e-waste from all seven municipal zones starting from July 1.
Residents can dial the toll-free number '1800-313-3141' for e-waste collection. The civic body has allotted 2,500 square metre land at Bharat for dumping of e-waste.
For construction and demolition waste, the civic body has hired another agency and allotted 12,000 square metre land at Kosad for dumping waste. The residents, real estate developers, etc, can dial toll-free number '1800-212-2829' for collection of construction and demolition waste.
"Agencies hired for the collection of e-waste, plastic waste and construction and demolition wastes will have to adhere to the rules set by the civic body. Agencies will have to pay fine ranging from Rs 100 to Rs 500 for not collecting waste," said a civic officer.
