Toeing the guidelines laid down by the Centre’s Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT), the Vellore Corporation is all set to increase water charges for household connections.

Dedicated supply

To ensure uniform distribution of drinking water to all areas falling under the Corporation limit everyday, the government had given its nod for a dedicated water supply project to Vellore Corporation – distribution system improvement under AMRUT at a cost of Rs. 234.93 crore.

On the funding pattern, the Tamil Nadu Urban Finance and Infrastructure Development Corporation (TUFIDCO) had informed the civic body that the Central government’s contribution would be Rs. 117.46 crore, while the State’s share would be Rs. 46.98 crore and the Vellore Corporation’s contribution would be Rs. 70.49 crore.

To execute the project and avail the government grant, the civic body had to follow certain guidelines laid down under AMRUT and terms and conditions prescribed by TUFIDCO. One of this was increasing the water charges.

“Earlier, the tariff was fixed according to the quantity of water supplied in kilo litres. As per AMRUT guidelines, the revised water supply tariff should be fixed based on the plinth area of the house,” an official of the Corporation said.

This was presented for approval before the Corporation’s council at the meeting held last week.

Coming out with the type of connection and plinth area, the Corporation, in the resolution placed before the council, has arrived at a total of 87,896 water supply connections.

Revised charges

The revised water charges is as follows:

The deposit for this category of connections is Rs. 10,000.

For non-domestic, the deposit amount is Rs. 25,000.

A monthly tariff of Rs. 500 has been fixed for up to 500 square feet, Rs. 600 for 501 to 1,200 square feet, Rs. 700 for 1,201 to 2,400 square feet and Rs. 800 for above 2,400 square feet.

“After completion of this project, the number of connections would go up to more than 1.10 lakh. We have sent the council’s decision to follow with the guidelines in regards to the increase in water charges, to the government,” he added.
