Businessman with a green thumb

LUDHIANA: Manjeet Matharu, a businessman from Dugri Phase II, who is into tool manufacturing, certainly has a gree thumb. The garden in his house is remarkably well-maintained. Not that his expertise is limited to manicured gardens. He also transformed the dumping ground in his lane into a pleasing space.
When the municipal corporation failed to clear the dumping ground in the lane, Manjeet built a lush green 600sqft belt running throughout the lane.He also built and maintained a Gulmohar (7,200sqft) and Amaltas (1 acre) garden in his locality two years ago. Even though residents have pitched in for its maintenance now, he was the one who pioneered the effort.
The two parks have different kinds of trees and plants like Hibiscus, Ashoka trees, Palm trees, Thuja trees and fresh fields of grass, besides sets of swings.
Manjeet said, "The area had everything except greenery and cleanliness and the MC was not doing much about it. The area was losing its aesthetic appeal. One day when I was crossing by, I thought there must be something I can do with this place. That was my moment of inspiration. With the contribution of residents, the MC is working with us for maintenance. The green belt was built around six months ago. With the help of the municipal corporation, we plan to build a canopy and plant more trees for further development of the park. Since the new season is here, we will plant different variety of trees."
