Expressing concern over the increasing drug abuse among students of professional colleges, Additional District Judge V. Venkateswara Rao said though the Central and the State governments had enacted laws to control drug abuse and illicit trafficking, police, forest and drug control officials were unable to implement them effectively for various reasons.
Speaking at a meeting organised on the occasion of the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking at Zilla Nyaya Seva Sadan here on Sunday, Mr. Venkateswara Rao blamed the nuclear family system. He said with the advent of nuclear family system, parents were unable to monitor activities of their children.
He underlined the need to create awareness among youth on the impact of drug abuse on health.
‘Treatment available’
Dr. V. Satyanarayana, psychiatrist, said that treatment for drug addicts was available at the Psychiatry Department, Government Hospital for Government Mental Health Care, Visakhapatnam. A.V. Ramana Murty, Divisional Forest Officer, N. Yugandhar, Drug Inspector, and others spoke.
Awareness rally
NCC cadets of 2(A) girls’ battalion took out an awareness rally on drug abuse at Gajularega. Lt. Col. T. Vijaya Kumar flagged off the rally at Satya Institute of Technology and Management College of Engineering.
