Raising concern over the shortage of playgrounds for children in the city, members of the Chandigarh Parents’ Association (CPA) have now requested the UT Administration to direct private schools to open their playgrounds for children in the evening.

In a letter submitted to the Chandigarh DC cum Estate Officer, Nitin Goyal, president of CPA highlighted, “Most of the parks in Chandigarh have been converted into green belts by the Municipal Corporation, as a result of this, children are not allowed to play there.” A copy of the letter has also been sent to the UT Adviser and UT Finance & Sports Secretary.

Further highlighting how private schools in the city run their own sports academies inside the premises in the evening, the letter states, “Most private schools are running commercial sports academies in their playgrounds in the evenings, whereas others have rented out their playgrounds to third parties for running commercial sports academies.”

Members of the CPA have urged the UT Administration to direct private schools to shut down the evening academies, and open their playgrounds for children. The UT Administration is however yet to consider the issue. Heads of private schools on the other hand have stated that children have sufficient places for playing.

“Each sector in the city has its own park, where children can easily play. The CPA is pointlessly raising an issue that does not even exist,” a head of a private school told the Chandigarh Newsline.
