As the proposal to build an underpass on the Panchkula-Zirakpur stretch in NH-22 is still waiting for a nod, representatives from various sectors raised the matter in the monthly meeting of the residents Sunday.

The proposal was mooted formally in 2014 in the House meeting of the Municipal Corporation (MC), following persistent demands of the residents of Sector 12 A and Sector 20, 21. However, it has never gone beyond the stage of discussions.

At present, there are two cuts in the Zirakpur-Panchkula stretch to allow traffic from Sector 12A, 12 and Sector 4 to connect to Sector 20 and 21 on the other side of the highway. However, huge traffic snarls are witnessed during the peak hours due to narrow roads.

“We need an additional under-bridge or under-pass, because the current system is insufficient to cater to the load of existing traffic,” said S K Nayyar, president of the Citizen Welfare Association.

Apart from the proposal, various other issues were discussed in the meeting, including construction of Haryana Roadways Bus Depot which was announced by Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar, need for building more bus-queue shelters in the trans-Ghaggar sectors and community centres.

Festive offer

Residents also demanded that Haryana Urban Development Authority (HUDA) should make efforts to develop Sector 5 as the City-Centre, on the lines of Sector 17 in Chandigarh. The pending proposal for building a state library was also discussed.

Some representatives also expressed concern over the recent crime incidents, and demanded that police presence should be strengthened in the town and more CCTV cameras should be installed.
