A DAY after violent incidents over the desecration of Quran, it was all quiet in Muslim-dominated Malerkotla located in Punjab’s Sangrur district. No arrest has been made though 250 people have been booked. Amid police investigation, however, a war of words is under way between SAD MLA Farzana Alam and former Congress MLA Razia Sultana.

After “torn” pages of the holy book were found June 24 near Jarg Chowk, some people who had gone to meet the SAD MLA Farzana Alam late in the evening to report about the incident were reportedly turned away. The 300-strong mob turrned violent and burnt vehicles and damaged the property of MLA.

On Sunday, Farzana Alam’s husband Izhar Alam, who is former DGP Prisons Punjab, targeted Razia Sultana and alleged the desecration incident to be a conspiracy.

“It is Razia Sultana who has given this feedback that a few people came to meet me and my MLA wife at our residence and they were not allowed to go inside. Even PPCC chief has given a similar statement, which needs to be condemned.”

Alam added, “We have always met people but those carrying rods, sticks, stones, petrol bombs and even weapons cannot be allowed. Everything was pre-planned, right from the desecration to the attack at my house, and all happened at the behest of our political rivals. I will make all efforts to get the culprits punished.”

Festive offer

He added: “The torn pages of the holy book were found at about 9.30 p.m. After about two hours, the mob was outside my gates with weapons and petrol bombs. It shows everything was planned, as all this cannot be arranged in such a short time.”

Razia Sultana reacted sharply to the charges. “This shows his (Izhar Alam’s) sick mentality. Let him say whatever he wants to. We have been political rivals since long and everyone knows about it. But doing politics over such a sensitive issue shows the vested interests of Shiromani Akali Dal in general and Izhar Aalm in particular.”

She added,”I am deeply disturbed over the incidents of torn pages of the holy book followed by violence. Let police do its job to find out the culprits. The government is theirs (SAD’s) and so is the police. Why should they fear anything. I have also spoken to the DGP and asked him to expedite the investigation.”

SSP, Sangrur, Pritipal Singh Thind said, “We are scanning the CCTV footage and are in the process of identifying those involved in the violence.”
