Weekend sport for women

Karnal: Staundi village, once a fierce opponent of shifting of electricity meters outside the houses under the Mhara Gaon, Jagmag Gaon scheme, has set an example for others by shifting all electricity meters outside the houses of consumers to curb power theft.

Sonepat: The 23-day Sonepat Women Hockey League championship was inaugurated on Sunday by Satish Raj Deswal, a social activist. Around 80 national and international women hockey players are participating. Four teams, Sonepat Eagles, Sonepat Warriers, Sonepat Bulls and Sonepat Mustangs, captained by Monika Dahiya, Manmeet Kaur, Kiran Dahiya and Neha Goyal, respectively, will vie for the championship. Former captain of Indian women hockey team and Arjuna awardee Pritam Siwach, who played a key role in organising the tournament, said the aim was to promote hockey among girls. The matches would be played only on weekends and the final match had been scheduled for July 17, she added. She claimed that it was for the first time in India that a women hockey league championship was being organised.

Why Hooda wants BJP to lay stones

Chandigarh: Former Chief Minister and Congress MLA Bhupinder Singh Hooda has termed the 81-km Sonepat-Jind railway line his dream project. He said 97 per cent of the work on the line had been completed during the previous Congress government. “In one and a half years of rule, all state BJP government has done is erect poles along the line. That’s why I say it is ‘phita-katu, badla and badli sarkar’, which is always inaugurating projects we had nearly completed or witch-hunting or issuing transfer orders,” Hooda said. He said he wanted the government to lay a few more foundation stones, so that the Congress gets a chance to cut the ribbon when it returns to power after three years.

Karnal village sets example

Karnal: Staundi village, once a fierce opponent of shifting of electricity meters outside the houses under the Mhara Gaon, Jagmag Gaon scheme, has set an example for others by shifting all electricity meters outside the houses of consumers to curb power theft. The village was once a headache for officials of the power corporation. The district administration and the power corporation had been facing stiff resistance from villagers since May when the village was included in the scheme in the first phase. The villagers opposed the move questioning why the government was not including their neighbouring Gagsina and Munak villages in the scheme. Despite odds, SDM Yogesh Kumar and others impressed upon them the merits of the scheme, including uninterrupted electricity supply.  The village is now getting power supply for over 18 hours.

From platform to another

Chandigarh: Sonali Singh, a BJP leader from Fatehabad, has started her acting career from TV serial “Amma” launched on Zee TV from June 25. The serial is being telecast every Saturday and Sunday. A member of the national executive of the Bhartiya Janata Mahila Morcha, Sonali Singh has been actively involved in social and political events for the past several years. In “Amma”, Sonali is playing Fatima, the second lead of the serial. She says she was interested in acting since her childhood. She has already done anchoring for Doordarshan. She says she will continue her social and political work while pursing her career in acting. Sonali also has plans to produce a film.

Gearing up for new role

Chandigarh: Twenty five Chief Minister’s Good Governance Associates (CMGGAs) appointed by the state government with an aim to monitor functioning of officials in the field are ready to join duties at their respective districts. Drawn from a diverse professional background, the 25 CMGGAs will get orientation training in Ashoka University, Sonepat, from July 1 to 16, meet CM Manohar Lal Khattar on the last day of their training and report in their respective district on the next day. A dream project of Khattar, the CMGGAs are aimed at strengthening ongoing implementation efforts, pilot an innovative solution at the district-level, and deliver on regular mandates given from the Chief Minister’s office. “The associates appointed by the government will spend 2/3rd of their time on analysing the implementation of Central and state government’s flagship programmes,” said Rakesh Gupta, Additional Principal Secretary to CM. “The CMGGAs will also monitor the functioning of tehsil office, Regional Transport Authority and Common Service Centres where there is maximum footfall and suggest measures to make these offices more people friendly,” he added.
