Classical violin duet

The M E S Kalavedi presented a violin duet under the Ammanni Iyengar Endowment programme, on Saturday evening. Nagai R Muralidharan is a top ranking violinist, who has served the Akashavani for 25 years as a staff artiste of Trichy station.

He has toured extensively and is a recipient of Sangeet Natak Akademy Award and “Kalaimani” from the Government of Tamilnadu. Co-player Nagai Sriram received training from his uncle Nagai Muralidharan and is a ‘A’ grade violinist of All India Radio. He has received few awards and prizes including Yuva Puraskar (Sangeet Natak Akademi) and best violinist award from the Music Academy.

From the very first Shahana varna the duo presented a package comprising of fairly familiar compositions. After the invocatory piece “Pranamamyaham” they chose a evocative raga Nayaki. In the composition “Ranganayakam” Dikshitar says “I meditate on the Lord Ranganayaka, who is with Godess Ranganayaki. He is the father of cupid and is the infinite one. He is adorned with inestimable Kaustubha gem.”

“Raghunathananu” was a quickie and the Varali kruthi was also pleasing. Equally impressive was Bilahari, the main raga for the evening. The alap itself was studied and impressive. In the second half, the duo presented on their violin, few well known devotionals like – Mayamma, devaranama (Krishna Nee Begane Baaro and Ksheerabdi Kannike) and concluded with another dignified thillana in raga Jinjoti. It was tuneful, classical without overdoing anything. Veteran Mannargudi Easwaran and young percussionist Guruprasanna gave adequate support on mridanga and khanjari, respectively.

Traditional veena

RT Nagar Association presented a Veena and a vocal concert, last Sunday.
Geetha Ramanand and Revathi Murthy are senior veena players of “Mysore Baani”. Both have served the Bangalore Akashavani, and are known for their good classicism. A less known varna “Sachidananda” gave them a bright start. They chose the composition “Ninna Nambideno” for a detailed airing. They presented raga and swara by turns and the stamp of classicism was very much evident. Another delightful raga Mohana was convincingly presented. N Vasudeva on mridanga and T N Ramesh on ghata, accompanied with good understanding.

Melodious vocal

Vinay Sharva, disciple of S Shankar and Nedanuri Krishnamurthy is a promising vocalist with many prize and awards to his credit. He caught the attention of the connoisseurs right from the opening Bhegade varna. The keerthana “Thulasidala” further added to the melodious outpouring.

Dharmavati with several lively phrases, meaningful nerval and sparkling swara prasthara, was compact but wholesome. With his resonant and good voice he also sang the devaranama “Shiriye” with good feeling and concluded with a Seshanna’s thillana briskly. B K Raghu and B S Prashanth accompanied on violin and mridanga respectively.
