Lately, Donald Trump has consumed the media with his political campaign and it is running its course much like his reality show. The last news I heard, he said "You're fired!" This comes off the heels of much publicized drama within his team.
On the same token, his antics remind me of my four-year-old. Both of their behavior seems to be a little erratic these days and not well thought out. He makes statements and decisions on a whim, much like my son does. All this seems to be working for him for now as it also does with my son. Therefore, I have come up with four things that they have in common.
1. They both like to win.
The Donald says he hates losers. It's all about winning. Lately my son has become a little competitive. I suppose it is natural, especially since he is in school with other children. I try to teach my son that "everybody" wins when playing games, but throw him into a game of air hockey with his best friend and it's all over. We might have to split them up. Donald will do anything to win, including insulting people. I can't say my son hasn't pulled out some insults lately. He does what he can for attention, much like The Donald.
2. They are both rich.
Well Donald Trump is rich. My son seems to think money grows on trees, asking for a toy every day. I told him to get a job but his answer was, "I'm just a little boy." So my heart melts and my husband drives him to Toys R. Us. The dysfunction continues. Donald Trump thinks that him being rich is the answer to all of our problems.
3. They are both arrogant.
It's no secret that Donald Trump is arrogant. His hair even has its own hashtag. My son's arrogance lies in the fact that it's part of "the phase." Like Donald Trump, he says he can do whatever he wants and when he's five he will be watching grown up T.V. I can't wait to see his face when we cut the cable. Woops. Sorry. Not sorry.
4. They both like to say, "You're fired!"
Oh Donald, you've said it so much that I'm starting to wonder if any one of those people on The Apprentice were ever hired... If they were fired, why do I see them still promoting you? Fired "shmired." It's all relative. When my son doesn't get what he wants, after doing a dance and rolling on the floor, he belts out, "Your fired!" In this case it doesn't work, I'm the boss and you can't fire the boss!
I find it uncanny how similar they both are yet the age gap speaks volumes. I believe my son will grow out of his "potty mouth" phase. I will try to channel his competitiveness in the right direction. My son is rich but not with material items or wealth. He's rich with love from his parents, teachers, friends and sibling. He just doesn't realize it yet. But he will. See, his self-absorption comes from being a four-year-old. Donald Trump's self-absorption comes from being Donald Trump.
