What are the reasons for children being abandoned?
This is a curse in our society. There are various reasons, including social and financial, that force a parent or mother to abandon the child. Trafficking of girls and forcing them into sex trade is one among them. Girls, mainly teenagers, are forced into sex trade and they become pregnant.

According to statistics, more girls are abandoned and surrendered than boys. How do you view this?
Birth of a girl is widely regarded as a burden on the family. From the childhood of a girl, parents start saving money for her marriage. This thinking needs to be changed and dowry should be banned. Many women even abort pregnancies fearing the birth of a girl, often under the pressure of in-laws, or husband, who wish for a boy.

What does DCW do in this field?
We are very involved in preventing child trafficking and female foeticide in the city. The commission raises such issues with the government and the police and always does the needful. Whenever such a case is noticed, we actively look into it. In some sections of our society, sex education also needs to be given.

Do you think adoption of abandoned children needs to increase?
The rehabilitation of an abandoned child is very important. More parents should come forward to hold the hands of abandoned or orphaned children. There is a lot of talent in them. Recently, we employed two orphaned girls who grew up in child care centres in our commission.
