Remedial programme for low achievers in Class VIII

SHIMLA: An additional coaching will be provided to low achievers of Class VIII during 2015-16 under the “remedial teaching” programme launched under the Rashtriya Madhyamik Shiksha Abhiyan (RSMA).

An additional coaching will be provided to low achievers of Class VIII during 2015-16 under the “remedial teaching” programme launched under the Rashtriya Madhyamik Shiksha Abhiyan (RSMA).

The programme is being launched from 2016-17 and a provision of Rs 89.75 lakh has been made for the additional coaching to 17,956 students of 1,436 schools in 123 blocks. The allocation had been made at the rate of Rs 6,250 per school.

The deputy directors and district project officers (DPOs) will identify the schools for conducting remedial teaching and additional coaching will be imparted in English, Mathematics and Science for two hours during the summer vacations and classes would be conducted for 15 days continuously.

A batch will consist of 20 students and additional coaching will be organised for students obtaining E and D Grade and if possible, C Grade also and teachers and retired teachers and BEd pass-outs would be engaged for remedial teaching who would be responsible to ensure that the performance of each low achievers comes up to desired level.

Six-hour orientation of selected teachers will be done at the District Institutes of Education and Training (DIETs) and a baseline test of students will be taken in the beginning under the supervision of school head where the remedial teaching will be conducted.

At the end of the remedial classes, a test will be administered by the school head for which an assessment will be prepared by schools. To prepare test tool and conduct baseline and end-line test, a budget provision of Rs 250 per school has been made.

Remedial teachers will be advised to keep close contact with other teachers and also have liaise with parents and other related professionals.

The remedial teachers will maintain a record of assessment and learning record and judge the strength and weaknesses of students and also make formative and assessments from their daily class work and homework and individual group activities and also and summative assessment by means of tests and examinations.

The head of the school and school management committee representative will supervise the learning enhancement programme of the school and Rs 2,000 per subject would be paid for 15 days and each DIET would submit a consolidated report to state project director.
