Syrian President Bashar al-Assad broke the fast of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan with Syrian soldiers in a frontline area east of the capital Damascus on Sunday evening, state news agency SANA reported.

The president had the iftar meal at the Marj al-Sultan airbase, which was recently recaptured by his troops in the Eastern Ghouta countryside east of Damascus, said SANA.

"For me, this is the most delicious food I have ever had," Assad said.

According to SANA, the president toured some military sites near Marj al-Sultan airfield.

The rare visit apparently aims to showcase confidence as the Syrian troops are battling on several fronts, most recently in the northern province of Aleppo, where the Syrian army backed by Hezbollah ground forces and Russian air cover unleashed a wide-scale offensive on the rebel positions. Endit
