FIVE-YEAR-OLD daughter of an Indian Air Force (IAF) officer was killed after she was hit by her school bus near the Officers Quarters, in Lohegaon, on Friday afternoon. A case in this regard has been registered on Saturday at Vimantal police station.
The deceased girl has been identified as Avani, whose father Flight Lieutenant Dharmendra Kumar is currently posted at the Air Force Station Car Nicobar. Police said that the girl was studying in UKG at the Air Force School.
Police sub inspector, MM Togarwad of Vimantal police station, said, “On Friday afternoon, Avani was dropped by the bus near the Officers Quarters around 1 pm. After she walked some distance, she was hit by the same bus. She fell down and came under the wheels of the bus. By this time, her mother was reaching the bust stop to pick her up. She was rushed to the hospital at the Air Force Station and from there, was referred to the Command Hospital. She was declared dead there.”

Police have arrested the driver of the bus, Balu Namdeo Hatkar (26), a resident of Moze Chawl in Lohegaon. Police said that the school bus for the Air Force school was operated by a private contractor. A First Information Report in this regard has been registered at Vimantal police station on Saturday.
The Air Force authorities said that the girl’s father, Flt Lt Dharmendra Kumar, was earlier posted in Pune but was later transferred to the Air Force Station Car Nicobar. His family stayed back in Pune, as the Air Force Station Car Nicobar is a non-family station. The authorities added that Avani’s body was flown to Delhi on Saturday and the last rites will be performed on Monday at the family’s ancestral village, near Gurgaon.
