The J.P. Nagar police have arrested 35-year-old man, who was posing as a Vice Chancellor of a fake university. The police said the accused, Santosh Lohar from West Bengal, had duped several students, colleges and universities across the country by promising “permission or approval” to run professional courses.

The police said the accused would move around in a car with a beacon, besides a logo of Government of India. He had also employed a retired IAS officer as an administrator to look after his office in J.P. Nagar. They claimed that the official was unaware of the fact that Lomar was a conman.

Lohar was arrested based on a complaint. The police seized his car, several fake documents and letterheads with Government of India logo.

The police said that he would approach colleges and private universities, promising them grants and requisite approval from the centre for professional courses. Two months ago, officials of the Regional Transport Authority had levied a fine on Lohar for unauthorised use of beacon and misusing the government logo, the police said.

Meanwhile, the police are also on the lookout for his associate, said to be based out of Delhi.
