The 17 Pembroke St, Kensington Park home where family is everything

The Advertiser

IT was a case of “location, location, location” when Keith and Angela Brewerton bought their Kensington Park home two decades ago.

The Brewerton’s bought their symmetrical villa at 17 Pembroke St in 1996 and Mr Brewerton says the home’s location, near schools, shops, parks and services, made it the perfect place to raise a family.

“It was next to Pembroke School, so the kids could walk to school, and it’s a nice street — there are no units on the street, there are lovely houses surrounding it (the home) and it has a great outlook,” Mr Brewerton says.

“We liked the block size and the fact that it will never be built out.

“It’s also really close to Norwood Parade too, so it really fitted exactly what we were looking for.”

But it didn’t always look as it does now.

The Brewertons have renovated the home throughout and added a rear extension, transforming it from a tired house into a warm and inviting family-centred home.

“It was completely dilapidated and it had an old extension on it which was rubbish, so we gutted the interior and put a new extension on the back and updated the bathrooms,” Mr Brewerton says.

“We wanted to live there while the kids grew up so we renovated it to last, and we did it to a high standard and a good quality.”

The home has up to five bedrooms, including one on the upper level. The master suite, which Mr Brewerton says is the couple’s favourite feature, has a walk-in robe and ensuite. The original part of the home also features a formal living and dining room.

At the rear is a large open-plan kitchen, family and meals area that opens to a terrace that overlooks the in-ground pool and spa. Mr Brewerton says the home’s layout made it ideal for a family.

“Because it has two living areas, you can have the kids down one end of the house and the parents at the other,” Mr Brewerton says.

“There are areas to escape to and it’s got a lovely warmth to it.

“The kitchen and family area is great, it’s just the right size and is big enough for a nice family do and we always had family functions here. If there was ever a get together for our extended family it was always at our place because it’s got such a lovely garden and it’s great for entertaining and parties.”

Mr Brewerton says, with the children having left home, it’s now too big for them and they plan to buy something smaller in the same area.

“With the kids having moved out the pool wasn’t getting used, so we’re looking for something smaller in Norwood.”
